Art Therapy has a two fold value, the first value leans more to the side of Occupational Therapy. Through the use of different materials and media we stimulate the various senses, i.e.  *colour - visual;  *pottery, papier mache - tactile,  *auditory - following instructions, all of these together stimulate hand-eye co-ordination. This helps to integrate the sensory system.

 The second value is that Art Therapy can provide an opportunity for communication and expression. Typically children start to draw at 18 months of age, if materials are not available they will improvise, either drawing in the sand or with food. The developmental steps in drawing are well documented and follow a set pattern whether a child grows up in a sophisticated city or on an island.

 An Art Therapist should pin point the Childs level and work from this point. Initially one should not have any expectations that the child may be able to make any representational work. The idea is that the Art Therapist creates an environment where an exploration can be done in a playful yet calm space, and where the child develops the confidence to make independent choices. This leads to a greater self-awareness and personal growth.

 Art Therapy is not only for children with disabilities but also for able children to stimulate the child’s visual, tactile and auditory senses and hopefully to develop any artistic talent.

 In all my time of working with children in this field both able and disabled, I have yet to have a child who does not respond in some way to the colour of paint, texture of materials and having a sense of pride on completing a project.
